Melusine appears in many French and English stories. In some legends she marries a knight of Lusignan, in others a count of Anjou. She is also mentioned as an ancestor of the Plantagenets, or of Jacquetta of Luxembourg.
In any case, in all versions she is portrayed as a loyal and supporting wife who gave her husband many children and brought him great prosperity. When they married, she had set the condition that he should never see her naked on a Saturday. But one fateful day he could not restrain himself and, spying on her while she took a bath, saw her transform into a mermaid.
She disappeared for ever, in all likelihood back to the woods where she once lived.
Anne Gehring is Melusine.
